About QSNCC

History

Following Thailand’s commitment to host the 46th Annual Meeting of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in Bangkok, the Royal Thai Government made the momentous decision to construct a national convention center of high international standards suitable to host this prestigious event.

A leading Thai architectural firm was appointed to design a structure with a strong Thai influence and to coordinate all construction work. A “build and design” technique was employed to ensure the center would be completed on schedule, and work began at the end of 1989.

Once ground preparation and piling was completed on the 20-acre site adjoining the Thailand Tobacco Monopoly, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously laid the foundation stone on 27 July 1990.

Work then began in earnest, with some 100 designers and more than 1,000 construction workers on around-the-clock shifts, determined to meet the August 1991 deadline. They succeeded. The main construction was completed at the end of June 1991 in 16 months and under budget, an unprecedented achievement given that a project of this magnitude would normally require 40 months to complete. The final decorative elements were in place by early August.

The Queen Sirikit National Convention Center was officially opened by Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit on 29 August 1991. The Center is named after Queen Sirikit in honor of Her Majesty’s 60th birthday, which fell on August 1992 and marked the completion of an auspicious fifth twelve-year cycle.

Thailand’s first purpose-built convention center opened its doors for its inaugural event from 1-15 October 1991, when 10,000 of the world’s most influential bankers and financiers from 154 countries attended the 46th World Bank/International Monetary Fund’s Annual Meetings. It was a momentous success and heralded QSNCC’s important role in spurring the tremendous growth in meetings, conventions and exhibitions held in Thailand.

Over the past two decades, QSNCC has hosted numerous prestigious gatherings on national, regional and global levels, earning a world -wide reputation as a well-run and well managed national convention center.

QSNCC is administered by the Thai Ministry of Finance’s Treasury Department and remains a public asset. However, it is under private sector management by N.C.C. Management & Development Co., Ltd.

Majestic Architecturewhy-qsnccs

Designed in sophisticated “Thai Hi-Tech” style, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center is a majestic convention venue of international standards that incorporates traditional Thai architectural form and decorative details. The yellow and soft-white colors and inward-sloping exterior walls are traditional Thai forms, while the three-tiered glass canopy at the entrance was inspired by a northern Thai temple. In front of the Center is the “Lokuttara”, an iconic sculpture by national artist Chalood Nimsamer that resembles hands joined in a wai, the traditional Thai greeting.

Inside, visitors are always aware of being in Thailand. More than 1,500 magnificent pieces of Thai art decorate the Center’s interior. Many are specially commissioned, from portraits of Their Majesties the King and Queen painted by national artist Sanit Disatapundh to the huge wooden carving depicting the coronation of Indra.

Top-Notch Technology

The Center is equipped with state-of-the-art communications, translation and audio-visual technology to provide the very best support for international events, including:

       • Simultaneous interpretation system of UN standard for 6 languages serving 4,000 delegates
       • Wireless internet system covering all exhibition areas
